I’m sorry for being so quiet on the art front lately, I’m working on a ton of stuff; commissions, gifts, things of my characters… it’s just all in various stages of not-quite-complete at the moment. this is my last weekend of freedom from english papers, so I’m going to be busting my butt on art before I have to devote time to writing again. I also put off opening for those headshot commissions due to schedule issues, but if anyone is/was interested I *will* be taking them still, just not sure exactly when.
anyway, I hope everyone is doing well. :>

lol juju’s special talent is being a pastel goth apparently. i guess their hobbies include being creepy, consuming ridic amounts of substances and conjuring satan.
don’t fucking steal this or our ponies or repost it w/o creds or use it as a coloring book or so help me god i will skin your ass alive. it’s my friend’s sketch and i spent so much effort inking it and am coloring it now that i have a tablet that isnt balls again. just sayin’. sorry i’m always really paranoid about posting line art. :c

this time it’s the one i wanted (monoprice 10x6~w/e same size, without those horrible useless hotheys on the side, and the plastic cover, and me knowing how to not fuck it up like an idiot this time)

I did something I’ve been meaning to do for a while with the one of devon (the doberman) and actually kept track of how long it took me to draw, because I was curious just how terribly slow I am.
sketch: not sure because I had it sitting around already and just spent a couple minutes refining it
inking: 4 hours (mostly spent on his hair)
flat colors: 20 mins
shaded details (eyes and makeup, piercings, hair shine, bow and ribbon, etc): 4 hours
getting it ready to be uploaded (flattening, adding name, color adjusting, mostly staring at slightly different versions of it and scowling a lot): 20 mins
total time: roughly 9 hours +
since I have a degree of disability to deal with I guess it’s understandable, but it still frustrates me to no end that I can’t just DRAW FASTERRR. seriously it should not take someone this long to make a flat colored headshot. 8( when I see artists posting things like 1 hour speedpaints that are of more than one character with a full background that look polished and amazing or artists justifying their art prices by saying things like “well it takes me a few hours to do a full character picture so that’s why the price isn’t cheaper” I’m in complete awe. even if I could somehow cut the time it takes me to draw everything in half I’d still be way too damn slow.
depressing trivia: at $15 for a floaty head, I’m getting roughly $1.60 an hour (and that isn’t counting the time it takes to make a neat sketch to work from). in order to make minimum wage (here in california it is $8.00/hour) I’d need to charge $72 for a flat colored headshot. which is completely ridiculous because my art isn’t worth that, I wouldn’t feel right charging that price, and no one would pay that much anyway. I’m mostly lamenting my insufferable slowness but there’s a little resignation over how low the market expects the price of art in this particular niche of the online art community to be as well. but mostly I’m just really slow. really, really slow.
sorry for the deflated rambling guys, just something I’ve been thinking a bit about lately. regardless of my speed issues, I’m still extremely happy that people like my art enough to even want to commission me. c:

i made my big end of the year list of commissions and am currently figuring out the best approach to finish it all the most efficient way, while working on almost finished/smaller pieces when i’m able. if you’re waiting on notes from me i’ll get back to you as soon as soon as i can.
br> i’ve said it before but it’s been quite awhile so i’ll throw this out here again: if anyone would like to either switch their commission(s) to real media, or commission me for some real media pieces (so i can at least be filling my time with something productive), PLEASE let me know! it’s a lot easier and much less painful for me to be able to work wherever i want, instead of having to sit here in front of this screen feeling miserable and popping pills constantly :(. if anyone does want to do this rates wont change and if you want to commish me we can discuss it but they’re generally the same price.
thanks guys, thank you so so much for being so patient with me. i hope i can get myself together soon. i feel so damn guilty that even the smallest things are almost a year due now… i really wish i could just take last year and throw it in the damn trash because bluntly it fucking sucked.

antique ref (update for 2013)
so when I finished yum☆pop’s ref sheet and then looked back at antiques I got all bummed since I put way more detail into yum’s outfit examples and they’re bigger and more polished. I rushed a lot of antique’s ref because I needed it for trades asap, and it shows. :c since then I’ve been gradually fixing it up here and there – I refined a lot on the main views + headshot and enlarged and redrew the majority of the outfit examples, plus added a close up of my hamsa necklace she always wears for fun (and pretty much to fill in blank space haha). absolutely nothing about her design has changed, save for my/her hair growing longer since then. c: it worked out kinda neat that I ended up finishing it around the new year/one year from when I first drew her ref.
aside from that, I’ll be off school for almost a month after thursday so I hope to work on a lot of art during that time!
